The boy who didn't want to visit Neverland
Hi everyone... today I'm presenting my short story, which came second in the Comunicare Hub magazine competition... I hope you like it!
The boy who didn't want to visit Neverland
- I can't understand, Tink!
It was Pan, sitting on the branch of a tree, with a worried expression... very different from his usual appearance. Tink, with her legs crossed, was sitting on the leaf of a branch in front of the boy.
- I offered him freedom! And he refused!
Pan really didn't understand what was going on...
Earlier, on his travels around the world, he encountered an unusual scene... a boy, just over seven years old, working in a coal furnace... his face was black with soot and his expression was serious... not consistent with your age. When he saw such a scene, Peter immediately landed next to the boy, being careful not to be noticed by the adults...
With his hands behind him, he watched the boy come and go, quickly finishing the clay oven around the wood. After a few moments, he decided to question the boy...
- What are you kidding?
- I'm not kidding... I'm working!
Pan began to follow the little one's fast walk. Every now and then the boy would put his hand on one of the ovens, only to take it away immediately...
- What are you doing?
- Checking the temperature of the oven... if you don't check this, the wood could spoil and the charcoal won't be good...
- Why?
- Because what?
- Why do you have to see the oven temperature?
- Huh... because I have...
- But isn't that an adult's job?
- My father is cutting the firewood that we need to make charcoal, my mother is stacking the firewood...
- Wouldn't you like to play?
- I prefer to have food...
- But if you come with me, food won't be a problem...
- And my parents?
- What do they have?
- Can you go together?
- In Neverland? Adults can't go there...
- Why?
- Because there is the land of dreams... and only those who can dream can stay there...
- Would my parents be alone?
- Yes... and you would never have to work that way again...
- I can't...
- But why?
- My family needs me...
- But you're a child...
- Without me, how will they survive?
- I didn't understand...
- My father... and my mother... they love me!
- Yes but...
- And they need me...
- But...
- Look, one day I'll be able to take my parents out of this life...
- But...
- But, until I grow up... and can give them a better life...
- What are you going to do?
- I won't abandon them...
- But you can remain a child forever... You don't need to grow up!
- It's been a while since I was a child... now, all I want is one day to be able to leave here and take care of my parents...
Peter still tried to argue... but the boy's obstinacy was such that Peter, despite being devastated, left with his friend towards the sky where he had come from, with the boy accompanying him until he disappeared into infinity. And now, Peter tried to understand why the boy had refused to accompany him to the dream world. Tink understood... for a long time that dreams were not part of that boy's life...
