THE CRYSTAL CUP

Chapter Five

The clock showed just over three in the morning when the bus finally pulled up to the landing platform… Cecília was a little sleepy and it took a while to process where she was. She didn't know where she could go, since she didn't know the city and, of course, everything was closed due to the hour. The most sensible thing would be to stay in the terminal itself and wait for dawn, when he would decide what to do. Now that she had arrived in town, she didn't think her idea of running away was such a good idea. Okay, no one would be able to find her, especially Ricardo... that is, if he really wanted to talk to her, which Cecília had serious doubts about. After all, if he really cared, he wouldn't have betrayed her or fought over someone else… but that was water under the bridge, what really mattered now was what she was going to do… well, she had to think of something…

One thing she knew she had to do first thing in the morning… call her manager and explain her position. After all, the least that could be expected of her, at that point in the championship, was that she hand in her resignation, so that they could replace her...

She took her bags and sat down on one of the benches scattered around the bus station. She looked at her watch, it was almost four o'clock in the morning. A little more and the day would break. Fortunately, it was summer, when the sun usually rises earlier than the horizon. The cool early morning breeze began to blow… well, cold by city standards, of course. Because it was still dawn, the thermometer showed a temperature between 20 and 23ºC. It was a nice morning. The possibility of reaching 30ºC in a few hours was real. Well, since she had her cell phone on, Cecília decided to explore the surroundings of the city. And it was then that she discovered that very close by there was a restaurant, which was also a bar and pizzeria, which was open at that time. Without thinking twice, she headed there. Well, it wasn't as close as it looked at first, but you couldn't be too picky at that time. After a few minutes of walking, she finally reached the spot.

She went to reception, asked if she could register, as she had just arrived from a trip and had no place to stay until that moment. The receptionist took a look at the records, confirmed that there were a few vacant rooms, and checked Cecilia in. In a few minutes she was already comfortably installed in a room. The daily rate wasn't expensive, but she couldn't stay there for long.

She would have to make some decisions in her life and then go on to fight. Of one thing she was sure… she wanted distance from Ricardo.

After a few hours of rest, with a clear head, she finally decided to take the necessary steps. The first one was to call her boss. Without going into too much detail, she explained that she was out of town, had no intention of returning anytime soon and that was why she was requesting her resignation from the company. He even tried to argue, but when he saw that his subordinate was adamant, he limited himself to asking her to send a formal resignation request electronically to the company, so that the procedures could be fulfilled. Well, one less problem to solve, she thought after turning off her cell phone. Now she would have to decide what she would do with her life. Staying at the hotel for a long time was out of the question, as was remaining unemployed. That decided, he decided to take a walk around the city center, to see if there was any possibility of getting a job as quickly as possible... he also took the opportunity to see if he could find any houses to rent, in the event that he decided to put down roots there. And she went wandering aimlessly, looking for something she had no idea what it was.

It was quite late when she returned to the hotel. She wasn't tired as she just got to know her surroundings without worrying about anything beyond the basics for the moment. She had found a little house that would fit her like a glove. It was just a bedroom and kitchen, but she didn't need more than that for the moment. And as for the job, she had a promising conversation with the manager of the furniture store near Paróquia São José…
